Drag ICE event provides fun, unique experience
The Department of Diversity Initiatives presented USC Aiken’s second annual drag show. Performers included Patti O’Furniture, Koko Dove, Anaya Devore, Don Javi, Judy Simmons, and Alexiya St. Martin.
O’Furniture was the hostess for the event which took place in the B&E gym on Tuesday. The queens and kings performed to a full room of over 350 people which was an improvement over last year’s drag show that took place in the SAC Lobby.
Each of the queens (and king) demonstrated their unique talents throughout the night. Judy Simmons performed her own musical numbers. Koko Dove, who is also a transgender woman, demonstrated dead drops (a style of dance typically associated with drag performances) and performed a ballad to a McDonald’s meal. Don Javi celebrated his Latin roots in each of his performances. Every performance brought something new to the stage.
The event concluded with a Q&A Session with the queens and king where they answered questions about their wigs, their wardrobes, and their motivations for doing drag. A young girl in the audience asked the queens if they knew RuPaul, prompting a story demonstrating RuPaul’s disregard for other drag performers.
Overall, the night was a unique way to earn ICE credit and engage with members of the local drag community.
