Gilman Scholarship provides financial aid for internships, study abroad

The Gilman Scholarship Program provides undergraduate students with up to $5,000 to intern or study abroad.

The purpose of the scholarship according to the Gilman Scholarship Program’s website is to enable “American students to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, skills that are critically important to their academic and career development.”

“The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints,” reads the website.

USC Aiken advertised the program in a student life email.

Students with military service backgrounds are encouraged to apply and “preference is given to veterans when other factors are equivalent,” according to the program overview.

Along with veterans, undergraduate students with high financial needs, first-generation college students, STEM majors, ethnic minorities, disabled students and students attending “historically black colleges and universities or other minority-serving institutions “ are supported by the Gilman Scholarship Program.

Students interested can find information on the application process and requirements on the Gilman Scholarship Program website.

The deadline for application is Tuesday, Mar. 24. at 2:59 p.m.
