Pop Culture: The origin of 420

Four-twenty is a number to signify celebrating the smoking of marijuana according to Oxford Dictionary.

The origin of this word began with Steve Capper and his friends in high school. Capper and his friends attended California’s San Rafael high school during the 1970s and would regularly meet after school at approximately 4:20 p.m. to smoke pot.

Now, April 20 (4/20) has become a holiday where pot smokers around the world celebrate as an act to support the legalization and the legal growth of marijuana. These celebrations are often big in states like Colorado or California where marijuana is legal.

Four-twenty is an excuse for some people to get high and have fun, but for some others, they see it as an opportunity to legalize marijuana.

Back in the 1970s, four-twenty was a part of a movement that used marijuana as a symbol to protest problems in the US like wars overseas or the power of corporations in America. Some marijuana companies are using this holiday as a commercial event to hopefully convince more Americans to use marijuana.
