Greek life gather for recruitment

USC Aiken’s Greeks gathered on the Student Activities Center Quad Friday afternoon to socialize and recruit new members.

Sorority and fraternity members were almost all masked, but very few were distanced.

When asked how COVID-19 has affected Greek Life, Bethany Trotter, recruitment counselor and President of the campus’ National Panhellenic Conference said, “It’s definitely made things a lot different.”

To address safety issues, councils have been split up to spread events out over different days. More events were moved to outdoor venues with observance of group sizes indoors. Students were also encouraged to follow preventive hygiene.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Vice-President, Silva Walker said, “they are putting our safety first,” having no face to face interaction and putting a pause on recruiting.

“Hopefully next semester we’ll have more interaction,” Walker stated.

Tucker Raefield, Lamda Chi Alpha treasurer and Inter-Fraternity Council president, said, “the virus is making recruitment very difficult” due to safety protocols and participation being down compared to last year.

Tray Williams, Delta Sigma Phi representative and vice president of recruitment for the IFC, said “we are making alternative ways to still do fun activities … also staying safe as well.”
