Column: Why so much hate?

Imagine this: you are listening to relaxing music on a YouTube Livestream. You click to the page to see why the chat is blowing up, and you see people spouting hate. Why?
With everything going on in our world, what is so important that it makes people say hateful things online? Things such as “I am NOT proud of you!” “I know it’s hard but you are a loser,” “You are NOT enough!” “I hate you,“ and many other hurtful and terrible things to say.
Why are there such hateful people? The majority of those messages were also suggesting that others should commit suicide. What is the point of that? Telling someone you don’t know to do that to themselves?
Online, no one really knows the other person. Someone that was listening to that livestream could have read those hateful messages, and been struggling with self-harm or self-worth before reading the messages.
It’s sad that people act like this when they are concealed behind a keyboard and screen.
Why can’t people just be nice to each other? Why so much hate?
