G. Anne, a Junior at USC Aiken has suffered multiple microaggressions within the University. Today she will be sharing her story.
Anne moved to America when she was only seven years old. Throughout her 14 years in America she has suffered many microaggressions from teachers, peers, colleagues and coworkers. The most recent situation was coming from a professor at USC Aiken “He told all of my peers to stay away me because ‘I was infected.’” According to Anne, the professor said this in front of the entire class.
Anne was attending a lab meeting with this professor during this incident. On that day Anne was preparing to give a presentation during the meeting “As I was walking up to present that’s when he announces to the whole class to stay away from me because I was infected.” She continued “As I was presenting, he kept making rude gestures during my presentation.” She continued “he would put his hand to his face, or throw his hands up like I was doing something wrong.”
The professor didn’t stop there, he continued to interrupt Anne as she was trying to answer questions that other peers had for her presentation. “That is when he just started to attack me. He told me in front of the class that I had no confidence, that I look at other people for reassurance and that I was unprepared.”
Anne ran out of the room crying. From what Anne has heard from her peers in the meeting, after she left the classroom “he told the whole class, ‘Gabby is the a mess huh?’”
Anne shared that she has been experiencing microaggressions ever since her family first ever moved to America. This week she wanted to shared her story to let the students and faculty realize that discrimination and bullies towards minority groups is happenings within our campus.
”I believe that discrimination still exists in society. We must fight it in every form.” - Andrew Cuomo
