Album Review with Alex: Sling
Claire Elizabeth Cottrill is an indie music sensation, but she is better known by her stage name “Clairo.” Born in Atlanta but raised in Massachusetts, the talented singer-songwriter began posting music on the internet at the early age of 13. However, it would be her lo-fi single “Pretty Girl” in 2017 that really put her on the map. Now, she has added a demonstration of her growth and evolution as a musician to her discography with her second full-length album in “Sling.”
Staying true to her indie and lo-fi roots, this album touches many bases while staying faithful to its dream and bedroom pop aesthetics. Delicately riddled with harmonies reminiscent of indie legends like Elliot Smith, “Sling” offers moments of tranquility and reminiscence accompanied with soft piano, acoustic guitar and jazz ensemble. Throughout the record, however, this is juxtaposed with more upbeat indie-pop moments with electric guitars and drums.
“Sling” proves to be Clairo’s smoothest album to date, with each idea gracefully flowing into the next. Multiple tracks provide beautiful modulations that are continuously pushing this album forward. This record effortlessly creates a relaxed and home-y environment musically while also providing thought-provoking and heartbreaking lyrics.
Tracks such as “Amoeba” create a dazzling array of colors with their light vocals and subtle instrumentation, while tracks like “Blouse” take a step back and creates darkness of sad thoughts and dejection.
“Sling” is a great entry point for music fans looking to get into indie-pop/folk-rock as well as lo-fi music. Released July 16th, 2021, “Sling” fills the indie music world with great excitement and anticipation for what the young and talented artist does next, as the record was released only a month before her 23rd birthday.
