Review: Exit, Pursued by a Bear
The University’s theatre club (UTP) recently put on the play “Exit, Pursued by a Bear.” This play was a satire that focused on the relationship between Nan and Kyle. Nan is a loving woman that works at a local vet and her husband, Kyle, is a mean and abusive man that likes to hunt for fun.
Nan finally has enough of Kyle’s physical and emotional abuse, so she ties him to a recliner and covers him with honey. Simon (Nan’s best friend) and Sweetheart (a local stripper) come to Nan’s rescue and help her to reenact scenes from the relationship to show Kyle how awful he treated Nan throughout the relationship.
This play was very funny due to the many characteristics of Nan, Simon and Sweetheart and how they interacted with one another. There was also an empowering underlying message of standing up for oneself. Nan had a lot of internal struggles, but in the end, she decided to leave Kyle because that was best for her.
This play set was designed so well that it felt like the audience was watching a movie. The set included an entire kitchen setup that looked as if it were cut straight out of a home.
The actors also did a fantastic job in this performance! Shout out to Eliyana Brown (Nan), Taryn Jett (Sweetheart), Patrick Grant (Simon) and Jacob Daignault (Kyle) for the wonderful performance.
