The Say Their Names Project: Tamir Rice
The Say Their Names Project is put together by Black Student Union and the Pi Theta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. During this edition, they covered the tragic murder of Tamir Rice.
On Nov. 22, 2014 a citizen called 911 and reported that there was a male holding a gun in the middle of the street but made it clear that it could possibly be fake.
Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback were the officers that arrived on scene. Loehmann killed Rice even though there was no immediate threat from him.
Loehmann was not charged and Tamir Rices’ murder was found to be justified due to him reaching toward his waistband. Rice’s family settled for $6 million from the city of Cleveland.
The Say Their Names Project meets its goal of being able to talk about uncomfortable situations while respecting families. Students are more educated and personal stories are highlighted as well.
