This is Halloween
Present day Halloween is a time for everyone to go out, wear cool costumes and get free candy from those who are willing to give it. But this isn’t the original theme of the holiday.
Around 2,000 years ago the Celts (mostly Irish) celebrated their New Year on Nov. 1 due to the switching of seasons. They believed that on their eve, Oct. 31., since this was the darkest time of year, there was time for spirits to run free.
Their solution? To celebrate Samhain (the celebration of spirits roaming the Earth). During this time they wore costumes.
Halloween was spread to American culture through Irish immigration and borrowing from European traditions.
Halloween has had a long history that could possibly continue to change in the future. Candy could stop being handed out and replaced for something else or traditions could become different.
