The Investiture of Chancellor Dr. Daniel Heimmermann
A ceremony for the investiture of Chancellor Dr. Daniel Heimmermann was held at the USCA Convocation Center March 18 at 10:30 a.m. This is an old tradition in which a new chancellor is recognized for their accomplishments and shows their representation of the university.
After a posting of the colors and national anthem, an invocation was led by Chloe Thomas, president of USCA’s Baptist Collegiate Ministries. The chancellor was presented by Dr. Thayer McGahee, dean of the school of nursing.
Dr. Heimmermann was presented with the Chancellor’s medallion that features the palmetto tree, the year of the University’s founding (1961) as well as the engraved names of USC Aiken’s former chancellors.
Dr. Heimmermann was recognized as the fifth Chancellor of USC Aiken in July 2021. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas Permian Basin and Mississippi University for Women. He also served as the dean of the college of liberal arts at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He was even ranked as the senior-most chief academic officer in the University of Texas System.
Dr. Heimmermann, originally from Wisconsin, attended Marquette University where he earned undergraduate degrees in Spanish and history. He also acquired a Master’s and a Ph.D. degree in early-modern French history. As a historian, Dr. Heimmermann has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in early-modern European history, the French Revolution and Napoleonic periods.
His academic career started when he became a professor of history and chair of the department of history and political science at the University of North Alabama from 2001 to 2008.
Dr. Heimmermann’s research area is French social, economic and cultural history with a focus on pre-industrial labor. His research has been published in several articles as well as a book, “Work, Regulation and Identity in Provincial France.” This book delves into the pre-industrial manufacturing economy of eighteenth-century Bordeaux, France.
Dr. Heimmermann enjoys being with his family – his wife, Claudia, 15-year-old daughter Lucie, and his dogs, Sofie and Ollie. Heimmerman is also a sports fan and supporter of Pacer athletics.
