Broken Ink release party celebrates magazine's 54th volume
Last Wednesday, April 13, USC Aiken’s literary and visual magazine, Broken Ink, held a release party celebrating the publication of its 54th volume. The party was held in the SAC Mezz and featured poetry readings, entertainment and refreshments.
Broken Ink is student-led and produced and has been an outlet for USCA student creativity since 1971. Currently, Broken Ink features all forms of art including painting, sculptures, photography, poetry and prose, short stories and even music, short films and video games.
According to Broken Ink’s official website, they “also accept scribbles and doodles, digital art and physical art, games, films, drawings on the backs of envelopes. All subject matter and content (are) up for consideration.”
The release party began at 5 p.m. and was opened up with a special short performance by Andrew Randolph and Chloe Towne, students of theater professor Paul Crook. They presented a scene from Shakespeare’s “The Turning of the Shrew” followed by a quick question and answer session regarding acting and theater.
This performance was followed by a musical presentation by USC Aiken’s Jazz Band. The performance was led by Jeremiah Brazzell, the group’s trombone player. Their musical lineup included a cover of Ben E. King's 1961 classic song "Stand by Me."
The event concluded with two poetry readings done by Paige Randall Singer, editor-in-chief of Broken Ink and Mark Hunter Daniels, Broken Ink’s literary editor.
The Broken Ink staff is made up of Singer and Daniels as well Ashton Johnson (layout editor), Jeremiah Brazzell (music editor), Macee Johnson (digital arts editor) and Samantha Taylor (social media coordinator). Broken Ink’s faculty advisor is Roy Seeger, a senior English professor who specializes in creative writing.
Anyone can attend a Broken Ink meeting if they are interested in getting involved; meetings are on Fridays at 12:00 p.m. in the student media office located on the first floor of the library.
This school year’s submission period is over, but information about submitting for the 55th volume will be available during the fall semester.
