The Last of Us Review: Episodes 4-6
The Last of Us has taken the world by storm since it premiered on Jan. 15 on HBO Max. This game adaptation has not only lovers of the game intrigued but also so many other people. A lot of game-to-show/ movie adaptations usually get backlash from changing the storyline as well as the characters, whereas TLOU has been praised for staying pretty true to the game.
Episode Four:
This episode continues Joe and Ellie’s journey to find the “Fireflies” and they end up in Kansas City. This episode introduces a revolutionary group that is trying to overthrow the Federal Disaster Response Agency (Fedra), as well as the inner drama that is occurring within that group. Joe and Ellie must find a way out of Kansas City, leading to them hiding in old, unused buildings. This episode introduces two new characters, Henry and Sam, which leaves the episode on a cliffhanger. This episode felt like a transitional episode because there was a lot of politics, but not too much happening.
Episode Five:
After teaming up Henry, Sam, Ellie, and Joel start on a journey to escape the city. They are faced with one of the biggest and most terrifying hoards of infected that the viewers have seen so far. Episode five shows the true realities and horrors these characters face due to the infected, as well as the political groups that band together. This episode was amazing because it was not only action-packed but also extremely emotional.
Episode Six:
Joe and Ellie continue their journey to find the “Fireflies” as well as Joel’s brother, Tommy. Within this episode, Joel and Ellie find a community that seems to be thriving in despite of the apocalypse at hand. They are in the wilderness, which helps them to remain anonymous to other groups, infected and looters. This town has running water, electricity, ample supplies and homes. Along with this comfort, they can enjoy things like watching movies and celebrating Christmas. This episode was refreshing because the viewers were given a break from all of the suspense and emotional toil. After resting and regaining supplies, Ellie and Joel set out to continue their journey. This episode leaves the audience on a cliffhanger, which keeps the viewers wanting more.
Overall, this adaptation of the game has done an extremely well job of staying true to the storyline without changing too much. The weekly releases through HBO Max have been great as opposed to dropping the whole show at once because it gives the viewers time to think about the episode they just watched and creates anticipation for the next episode.
