Women-owned Businesses in Aiken: Cori's Salon

After the salon she worked at for a decade closed down, Cori Possee took the leap and built her own.

Possee was originally inspired by a female friend to get into hair styling. She said that her friend “always seemed to be having fun”, and after enrolling in cosmetology school, Possee fell in love with the job, too.

With the help of her husband, Possee was able to secure a place for her business at 306 Park Avenue Southeast.

“I couldn’t have done it without my family,” said Possee. “They’ve been with me every step of the way.”

Not every day was easy, especially when first starting out. Possee said that she initially built her clientele through unpaid work.

“You can’t expect to make a lot of money in the beginning. That’s something not a lot of people expects,” said Possee.

Cutting hair isn’t all that’s part of the job description. Possee said that some of the most important skills to have are determination and friendliness.

Even after a long day of socializing and physical labor, Possee said that adjusting to your customer’s needs can create a life-long relationship.

“I’ve heard stories that I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” said Possee. “I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”
