Black History on Campus: African American Studies Minor

Black History on Campus: African American Studies Minor

African American Studies is one of the newest minors offered to USC Aiken students. This minor is meant to provide students with the opportunity to learn more about African American history in various contexts with the opportunity to apply this learning to their degree.

As with any minor, there is an 18 credit hour requirement including the core requirements. In terms of core requirements students can choose from:

  • ENGL A286: Survey of African-American Lit

  • SOCY A365: Sociology of the Black Experience

  • COMM A 362: African-American Rhetoric

  • HIST A340: Survey of African American History

  • HSSI A202: African-American Studies

Other courses that apply to the African American studies minor are:

  • ENGL A430: Southern Literature

  • HIST A436: Issues in African-American History

  • MUSC A176: Intro to African & African-American Music

  • HISTA377: Pop Culture in U.S. History

Because the minor is fairly recent there is not much publicization of the option. If you are interested or have any questions you can contact Dr. Melencia Johnson, Dr. Elizabeth Webb or your academic advisor.
