Kink of the Week: Why we "do" it
Pacer Times’ infamous weekly sexual health column, Pacer Pillowtalk, has turned the heads of students, faculty and even strangers.
Initially, Pacer Pillowtalk began as a conversation starter, something that would address student lives outside of the classroom: sex and everything under the sexual, romantic and orientation umbrella. We’ve covered gender identity, consent, menstruation, domestic violence, at-home breast exams and a lot of topics from … under the belt. So, why do we publish the topics we do? An excerpt from an article written by former reporter and current Business Manager Erica Bennett addresses this question:
It would be negligent to discuss sex without addressing safe methods of engaging in kinks.
Abstinence-only is a statistically poor response to preventing STDs, pregnancy and relationship harm. Discussing sex openly, including taboo topics, with peer-reviewed articles to supplement individual research is a more positive approach to preventing harm. Students are more than their coursework, and ensuring positive, healthy and informed sex lives off campus protects students’ well-being on campus.
