Oswald Series

Oswald Series

On Nov. 7, 2023, USCA’s Department of English hosted the Fall 2023 Oswald Writers Series, which featured Alan Berecka.

During this event, Berecka read poems from various moments throughout his life. Berecka read for about an hour and then answered questions during a short Q&A.

The poems presented covered a plethora of topics and emotions. Some of these poems were extremely deep and emotional, whereas others were comical. Between many of the poems, Berecka would share anecdotal stories that held inspiration or give quick explanations before diving into a poem.

Berecka’s poetry is very narrative, which allows the audience to get short glimpses of his life. Many of the poems had family and religion brought up within them.

Berecka had a very impressive arsenal of stories to share, which kept the audience entertained and engaged for the full hour.

During the Q&A Berecka expressed his desire to quit poetry through different points in his life but then stated

 “There isn’t a 12-step program for poets.”

After the initial event, there was a book signing held. Three of Berecka’s collections of poetry were for sale; “A Living Is Not A Life: A Working Title,” “With Our Baggage” and “Welcome To The Hamlet of Stittville.” After purchasing a book, guests were able to get their copies signed by Berecka himself.

Overall, this event was wonderful! Alan Berecka did a fabulous job showcasing the work he has written over the years, and I was so impressed by his masterful storytelling
