Diversity Initiatives to host "Not Just Another Pretty Face"
Tuesday, Oct. 8, Diversity Initiatives will be hosting the event “Not Just Another Pretty Face—Ricky Martin, the Activist” by speaker Professor Adrienne Banko, a Spanish professor here at USC Aiken.
Diversity Initiatives described the circumstances that inspired the event.
“Over the summer break, Puerto Rico found themselves in a lot of political turmoil when leaked messages from former Governor Ricardo Rosselló and his inner circle were released to the public,” said Amethyst Marroquin.
“In responses, celebrities like Ricky Martin advocated for the resignation of the governor and those involved the with scandal,” she finished.
Diversity Initiatives encouraged students to attend the event “in order to have a better understanding about the political climate in Puerto Rico and how civil participation can genuinely make a change.”
Marroquin also noted that the event provides an opportunity to understand how celebrities can influence a social movement.
This statement corresponds to Ricky Martin’s status as not just a “popular Latinx musician,” but also as an activist for the LGBTQ+ community.
For students unable to attend the event but are still interested in educating themselves on the political climate, Diversity Initiatives also encouraged students to visit the Ricky Martin Foundation website.
