Things to do in Charleston
Charleston South Carolina is a beautiful and historic city that is located on the coast. Anyone from South Carolina has most likely not only heard about Charleston but also visited at least a handful of times. The beautiful beaches are the perfect place to spend Spring and Summer break for students looking to relax.
Anyone who has visited Charleston knows that the Market Downtown, King Street and the Battery are all places to visit. But what are some other things to do?
Go Kayaking: There are a handful of places within Charleston, Kiawah and Mt. Pleasant that offer kayaking. With most of these places, you can choose to either follow a tour guide or go adventure on your own.
Nature Adventures is a great one that goes through Shem Creek. Kayak rentals are $45 for four hours and tours are the same price, but only two hours long.
When going off without a tour guide your group is given a map, a water pump, directions to different areas within their domain, a demonstration on how to properly row and a safety run-down.
I highly recommend checking this out for a couple of hours in nature! There is tons of wildlife to see like dolphins and various birds!
Sullivans Island’s Low Tide: Sullivans Island has an amazing low tide that reveals a massive sand bar. When this sand bar is exposed it is easy to find tons of sand dollars and sea shells, as well as the occasional starfish or conch shell. Just be mindful that sand dollars are often living; be kind and only take the dead ones.
Poe’s Tavern: Poe’s tavern is located at 2210 Middle St, Sullivans Island, SC 29482. A little bit of a drive from Charleston but still a spot that is hard to find anywhere else!
The entire restaurant is dedicated to Edgar Allen Poe. The walls are covered in art, pictures and poems from Poe. Each item on the menu is named after one of Poe’s works.
They have a large number of burgers, tacos, salads and sides to choose from as well as a hefty beer list. They are located right off of the beach, so it is the perfect spot to go eat after a long day at the beach.
Keep an eye out for local markets as well! There is almost always some type of market in the mornings within downtown or Mt. Pleasant.
Caviar and Bananas: Caviar and Bananas is located at 51 George St, Charleston, SC 29401.
They are located in the heart of downtown, so a perfect place to grab a bite when shopping on King Street.
The store is broken up into multiple different areas. At one counter various amounts of delicious coffees are available for order. Another section handles sandwiches and salads. The sandwiches and salads have pre-made recipes or build-your-own options. There is another counter that has deli meats for sale as well as take-home dishes.
The store also has tons of different drinks, snacks, jams and other random options available for purchase.
