USCA Disc Golf Course Review
USCA recently installed a disc golf course in the woods behind parking lot D.
I have played this course several times, and find the course to be quite enjoyable even when compared to some of the other popular local disc golf courses. In fact, the USC Aiken course is one of my favorite local courses.
The holes on this course are fairly varied and make good use of the natural landscape of the campus. Hole seven forces players to avoid a thick brush on either side of the green. Hole nine, on the other hand, consists mostly of a long and grassy uphill slope that allows players to put their full strength into their drive.
Another aspect I appreciate about the campus’ disc golf course is its skill level. I find that this course is easy enough that beginners can enjoy a game of disc golf. There are no water hazards and most of the holes are par three but the course has enough difficulty and variation that more experienced players will not be let down. Because of this moderate difficulty, players can be as relaxed or competitive as they want, allowing for more consistent enjoyment of the course.
Although it is an amazing addition to Aiken’s disc golf courses, there are a few drawbacks to the USCA course. The most notable is the thickness of the brush on the course. On several of the holes, players run the risk of being unable to find their disc if they throw it outside of the green. The grass surrounding the green on hole three is so thick that I have started skipping the hole when I play to prevent losing another disc.
Another drawback is that this course has only nine holes, making games fairly short. This issue is understandable given the limited space for a disc golf course on campus. Also, the hole variation does mitigate this issue some, as playing through twice can be an enjoyable way to play a longer game.
Despite the few drawbacks of the USCA disc golf course, it is still a fun way to get some fresh air and exercise. I highly recommend that students grab some discs from the student life office and yell four.
